Tofu cat litter is a manufactured product, not a mined one. Its quality is decided by a sequence of process decisions: which soy by-product stream enters, how dry the fiber is before extrusion, which binder system holds the granule together, and what the batch QC actually measures. 1. Raw Materials: Soybean Fiber, Starch and Binders
Tofu litter starts as a by-product stream of tofu (soybean curd) production: okara — the fiber-rich residue of ground soybeans — plus soybean starch and, in many formulas, pea fiber or cassava starch as extenders. The first quality decision is which stream and how clean it is:
- Fiber source — fresh okara vs. dried/rehydrated material; source consistency changes batch-to-batch stability;
- Aflatoxin testing — soy-based raw material must carry aflatoxin B1 batch test for the EU and Middle East markets; "natural" is not a substitute for a test;

Ask the supplier: is the raw material owned and tested, or bought on the spot market? Spot-market fiber is the most common hidden cause of batch inconsistency.
2. Drying and Grinding
The fiber is dried to a controlled moisture content — our plant-based TDS range is 5–9% — then ground to the target fineness. Two things matter here:
- Moisture target and method — the drying method (e.g. 105°C to constant weight) must be on the COA. Too wet and the granule sticks and molds in transit; too dry and dust rises;
- Grind uniformity — uneven grind produces weak granules that crack in the bag and during scooping.
A moisture content below the target range is common in economy production to save drying cost — the granule feels lighter and cheaper, but dust rises and the clump weakens. This is a hidden cost of "cheap per bag": the drying step sets the dust-vs-moisture balance, and packaging cannot fix it later.
3. Mixing and the Binder System
The dried fiber and the binder are mixed in a controlled ratio. This is the formula step — the part that makes "tofu litter" differ between factories. The binder ratio and type decide:
- Clumping speed — how fast the granule absorbs and gels on contact;
- Clump strength — whether the clump holds when scooped or crumbles back into the box;

4. Extrusion and Granulation
The mixed dough is extruded and cut into granules — typically 1.5–3 mm, 2–4 mm or 3–6 mm — then dried again to stabilize. Granule size and shape decide three buyer-visible properties:

5. Screening, Dust Control and Moisture Stabilization
After drying, the granules are screened for fines and dust, then stabilized before packaging. This step is where the "dust-free" claim is won or lost:
- Dust removal — sieve or ISO method with a stated sample size (e.g. ISO 8130); "dust-free" without a method is a phrase, not a number;
- Moisture stabilization — the finished granule must hold its moisture spec through packaging and 35–45 days of sea freight; moisture-barrier packaging (PE-lined bags, vacuum) protects it — see the bulk density and container-loading guides for the freight side.
6. Batch QC: What the COA Should Show
Batch QC is the step that separates a supplier from a factory. A verifiable tofu COA states batch number, methods and results together:
