Tofu cat litter is a manufactured product, not a mined one. Its quality is decided by a sequence of process decisions: which soy by-product stream enters, how dry the fiber is before extrusion, which binder system holds the granule together, and what the batch QC actually measures. This guide walks the full line — from soybean fiber to the finished clumping granule — and tells you which step to interrogate at each supplier.

1. Raw Materials: Soybean Fiber, Starch and Binders

Tofu litter starts as a by-product stream of tofu (soybean curd) production: okara — the fiber-rich residue of ground soybeans — plus soybean starch and, in many formulas, pea fiber or cassava starch as extenders. The first quality decision is which stream and how clean it is:

Ask the supplier: is the raw material owned and tested, or bought on the spot market? Spot-market fiber is the most common hidden cause of batch inconsistency.

2. Drying and Grinding

The fiber is dried to a controlled moisture content — our plant-based TDS range is 5–9% — then ground to the target fineness. Two things matter here:

A moisture content below the target range is common in economy production to save drying cost — the granule feels lighter and cheaper, but dust rises and the clump weakens. This is a hidden cost of "cheap per bag": the drying step sets the dust-vs-moisture balance, and packaging cannot fix it later.

3. Mixing and the Binder System

The dried fiber and the binder are mixed in a controlled ratio. This is the formula step — the part that makes "tofu litter" differ between factories. The binder ratio and type decide:

4. Extrusion and Granulation

The mixed dough is extruded and cut into granules — typically 1.5–3 mm, 2–4 mm or 3–6 mm — then dried again to stabilize. Granule size and shape decide three buyer-visible properties:

5. Screening, Dust Control and Moisture Stabilization

After drying, the granules are screened for fines and dust, then stabilized before packaging. This step is where the "dust-free" claim is won or lost:

7. Common Quality Failures — and How to Detect Them

Every failure buyers complain about traces back to a specific process step:

Why the same "tofu litter" differs between factories: two factories can both sell "soybean-based clumping litter" and deliver different products, because quality is decided by parameters that never appear on a sales page — the raw-material stream, the binder ratio, the moisture target and the QC sampling frequency. 8. What to Demand at the Factory (Video or On-Site)

  1. A live view of the drying and extrusion line — the two steps where quality is made;
  2. The retained-sample shelf and batch traceability from raw material lot to finished bag;
  3. Three consecutive batch COAs with methods, then send one sample to an independent lab (CNAS/ilac-MRA accredited) and compare — the COA guide shows what to check;

What is tofu cat litter made of?

Soybean fiber and starch (the by-product stream of tofu production) plus a binder — typically guar gum, starch or synthetic. The binder decides clumping and flushability; the fiber decides moisture handling. The ingredient statement should list each component and share.

Why does tofu litter stick to the bottom of the box?

Sticking happens when the binder gels too fast or the granule over-hydrates. It is a formula and granule-size problem, not a universal tofu flaw: 1.5–3 mm granules with a controlled binder ratio and 5–9% moisture reduce it. Demand a batch test with the method.

Is tofu cat litter flushable?
