Cat Litter Bulk Density: Why g/L Changes Container Economics for Importers
Definition. Loose bulk density is the mass of cat litter per unit volume, measured in g/L: bentonite ~950 g/L, tofu 597 g/L (CTI batch report), cassava 600-650 g/L. Method. Loose pour into a graduated cylinder, level off, weigh (density = mass / volume). Why it matters. Density decides container loading: ~26 t bentonite vs ~18 t plant-based per 20GP — and therefore the freight cost per kg.

Bulk density is the most under-rated number on a cat litter COA. It does not appear in marketing brochures, it never makes the packaging design, and most buyers never ask for it. Yet it silently decides how many tonnes fit in your container, how much freight you pay per tonne, and whether a “cheap” FOB price survives contact with the shipping line. This guide explains what bulk density is, what it means for your container math, and how to verify the number a factory gives you.
What Bulk Density Actually Measures
Bulk density is the weight of a given volume of loose litter — typically grams per litre (g/L) or grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³). One g/cm³ equals 1,000 g/L. It is not the density of the raw material itself, but of the packed granules with the air gaps between them included. That is why the same material can ship at different densities depending on granule size, shape and how it settles.
Two things to note before any comparison:
- Loose vs. tapped density: A container that has been vibrated or dropped settles to a higher “tapped” density than the “loose” density quoted on most TDS documents. Quoting one and shipping the other is a common short-cut — always ask which one you are buying.
- Moisture changes it: A hygroscopic litter absorbs humidity in transit, gains weight, and its density drifts. Density should always be read together with the moisture figure on the same COA.
Why Importers Should Care: Freight Is Paid Per Container, Not Per Kilo
Sea freight is sold per container. Your cost per tonne of litter is therefore freight divided by the tonnes you actually fit inside. Density determines that denominator. Two consequences follow:
- Weight-limited vs. volume-limited: Every container has a payload ceiling (roughly 21.8 t for a 20GP, ~26.5 t for a 40HQ) and a volume ceiling (~33 m³ nominal for a 20GP, ~76 m³ for a 40HQ). A dense litter hits the weight cap first; a light litter fills the volume first. Which one you hit decides how much freight you effectively pay per tonne.
- The 40HQ trap: High-density mineral litter in a 40HQ typically reaches the weight cap with half the box still empty — you pay for 76 m³ and use ~40%. This is why bentonite is usually shipped in 20GP, and why “40HQ always saves freight” is a myth.
