Bulk density is the most under-rated number on a cat litter COA. It does not appear in marketing brochures, it never makes the packaging design, and most buyers never ask for it. Yet it silently decides how many tonnes fit in your container, how much freight you pay per tonne, and whether a “cheap” FOB price survives contact with the shipping line. This guide explains what bulk density is, what it means for your container math, and how to verify the number a factory gives you.

What Bulk Density Actually Measures

Bulk density is the weight of a given volume of loose litter — typically grams per litre (g/L) or grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³). One g/cm³ equals 1,000 g/L. It is not the density of the raw material itself, but of the packed granules with the air gaps between them included. That is why the same material can ship at different densities depending on granule size, shape and how it settles.

Two things to note before any comparison:

Why Importers Should Care: Freight Is Paid Per Container, Not Per Kilo

Sea freight is sold per container. Your cost per tonne of litter is therefore freight divided by the tonnes you actually fit inside. Density determines that denominator. Two consequences follow:

  1. Weight-limited vs. volume-limited: Every container has a payload ceiling (roughly 21.8 t for a 20GP, ~26.5 t for a 40HQ) and a volume ceiling (~33 m³ nominal for a 20GP, ~76 m³ for a 40HQ). A dense litter hits the weight cap first; a light litter fills the volume first. Which one you hit decides how much freight you effectively pay per tonne.
  2. The 40HQ trap: High-density mineral litter in a 40HQ typically reaches the weight cap with half the box still empty — you pay for 76 m³ and use ~40%. This is why bentonite is usually shipped in 20GP, and why “40HQ always saves freight” is a myth.

Container Math: 20GP and 40HQ Loading Estimates

Using the densities above and standard container dimensions, here is what a container roughly holds. Treat these as planning estimates — the exact number for your pack comes from a loading test.

What this means in freight terms: suppose sea freight to your port is USD 4,000 per 20GP. Bentonite at 20 t gives ~USD 200/t freight; tofu at 17 t gives ~USD 235/t — roughly 15% more freight per tonne for the same box. The difference is not the factory’s price; it is physics. Weight-Limited vs. Volume-Limited: The Decision Framework

Before you choose a container type or compare two suppliers, decide which limit you are going to hit. The rule is simple: multiply the density by the usable volume of the box, and compare the result to the payload ceiling.

One more consequence buyers rarely consider: bag count per container. A 20GP carrying 17 t of tofu at 6 kg/bag holds about 2,830 bags; the same box carrying 20 t of bentonite holds about 3,330 bags. Container economics are also pallet and bag-count economics, which feeds directly into your retail unit costing.

How to Read Density on a COA — and What to Ask the Factory

Density is only useful if you can trust how it was measured. When a COA or TDS quotes a bulk density, verify five things:

  1. Loose or tapped? Tapped density runs higher. The number must state which method was used, and it must match what ships.
  2. Third-party or internal? A CTI/SGS/Intertek report carries more weight than a factory’s own figure. Ask to see the report, not just the summary line.
  3. Sample preparation: Was the sample dried to a stated moisture before weighing? Moisture inflates density.
  4. Conditions: Temperature and humidity during the test affect the result for hygroscopic plant-based litters.
  5. Batch linkage: The density must trace to a batch number you can audit — the same discipline as any other COA parameter.

The commercial question is freight per tonne at your destination, not the density number alone.

How many tonnes of cat litter fit in a 20GP container?

As an estimate from factory TDS densities and standard container dimensions: sodium bentonite about 19–21 tonnes (weight-limited), tofu about 16–18 tonnes (volume-limited), cassava about 16–18 tonnes. Exact loading depends on packaging format, bag type, palletization and the port’s weight limits — always confirm with a loading test for your specific pack.

How many tonnes of cat litter fit in a 40HQ container?

For all three of our main lines the 40HQ is weight-limited at roughly 24–26 tonnes, because even low-density litter exceeds the payload before the box is full. The difference is volume utilization: bentonite uses only about 35–40% of the box volume at the weight cap, while tofu and cassava use roughly 55–60% — which is why high-density mineral litter is usually shipped in 20GP and low-density plant litter can justify a 40HQ.

How do I verify the bulk density a factory quotes?

Demand the batch COA with the method stated. The standard is to measure loose (untapped) density of a representative sample with a known container volume. Ask for: test standard, sample preparation, temperature/humidity during the test, and whether the number is loose or tapped density. Does bulk density affect bag weight or retail perception?

Yes. A 5-litre bag of bentonite weighs about 4.7 kg while a 5-litre bag of tofu weighs about 3.0 kg — consumers notice the difference when lifting. In price-per-kilo markets heavier bags win; in premium markets the lighter plant-based bag is often preferred and easier to carry. Density also affects warehouse cube and how many bags fit on a pallet.
