Here's a scenario we hear constantly from new buyers:
"We tested two bentonite samples. Both claimed ≤0.1% dust and 3-second clumping on the spec sheet. One performed beautifully. The other turned into a dusty, crumbly mess. Why?"
The answer has almost nothing to do with the factory's processing formula. It's geology. The raw mineral itself — where it was mined, how deep, and what it's composed of — determines 80% of the performance. Processing can optimize the remaining 20%, but it cannot fix bad ore.
Bentonite is a clay formed from volcanic ash over millions of years. Its value as cat litter comes from one mineral: montmorillonite. The higher the montmorillonite content, the better the clumping and absorption.
But here's where it gets complicated — and where most buyers get burned:

A factory sourcing from a low-montmorillonite mine must add sodium carbonate (soda ash) as an activating agent to artificially boost swelling. This works — temporarily. But the activated bentonite degrades faster in storage and produces more dust over time. That's why two samples with identical factory specs can age completely differently once they reach your warehouse.
Surface-level bentonite — the top 5–15 meters of a deposit — has been exposed to weathering, groundwater leaching, and temperature cycling for millennia. It's fractured, oxidized, and mineralogically inconsistent.
Deep-mined bentonite — extracted from 30–80 meters below the surface — has been protected from weathering. The strata are compacted and homogeneous. The montmorillonite crystals are intact and unweathered. This is the material that produces the legendary "instant clump" that demanding markets expect.
Our Liaoning mine operates at depths of 40–60 meters. Every batch comes from the same geological layer. This is not a processing achievement — it's a geological one. And it's the reason our bentonite consistently tests at ≤3s clumping and ≤0.1% dust without chemical activation.
For Buyers: When evaluating a bentonite supplier, ask three questions about the mine — not the factory. (1) What is the montmorillonite content of the raw ore? (2) Is it sodium-type or calcium-type? (3) Is it deep-mined or surface-mined? A factory that can't or won't answer these questions is probably sourcing from variable surface deposits.
The cat litter industry has a transparency problem. Most factories publish the same handful of metrics — clumping time, dust percentage, odor control days — but these numbers are taken from ideal-condition lab tests on fresh samples. They don't reflect:
When you buy bentonite from a factory that owns its mine, you're not just buying a processed product — you're buying a specific geological deposit. That deposit's properties are the floor for your product quality. Processing can only raise it so far.
