Cat Litter Certifications: ISO 9001, HALAL, HACCP, SMDS
Definition. A factory certificate is an audit-based document proving a management system — not a product test. The logo proves the audit happened; the scope page proves the audit covered your product line. Always request the certificate with its scope, validity dates and issuing body register.
Importers increasingly ask for certificates before a quotation, but a certificate is only as valuable as what it actually covers. Here is what each certificate means, what to verify, and the two mistakes buyers make.
ISO 9001 — Quality Management System
What it is: a process-consistency system audited by an accredited body. What to verify: the scope states cat litter / pet product manufacturing (many factories hold it for unrelated lines); validity covers your production window. Common mistake: treating ISO 9001 as a product-quality claim — it is a process claim.
HACCP — Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points
What it is: a food-safety hazard-control system. Relevant when the factory handles plant-based (food-grade) ingredients like tofu or cassava fiber. What to verify: HACCP plan scope includes the ingredient lines you buy; CCP records exist (moisture, metal detection).
HALAL — Ingredient and Process Compliance
What it is: certifies ingredient sourcing and process compliance for Muslim-majority markets (Gulf, Malaysia, Indonesia). What to verify: the certifying body is recognized in your destination market; scope covers the specific product line and factory site. Common mistake: accepting a certificate from a body your market's authorities do not recognize.
SMDS — Supplier Management Data Standard
What it is: a structured factory-compliance data standard used in pet-product supply chains — documented procedures, traceability, audit readiness. What to verify: the audit report and corrective-action history, not just the certificate file.
What EU buyers actually need (not CE)
Cat litter is not a CE-marked category. For the EU, the real requirement is PPWR packaging compliance — a Declaration of Conformity per packaging type under Regulation (EU) 2025/40, in force since August 2026. See our PPWR guide for the documentation to request.
